Hops 'Aureus'

Humulus lupulus 'Aureus.' Faster than a morning glory, more powerful than a passion vine, able to leap tall buildings with a single bound. That sums up hop vines. 'Aureus' is a gold-leafed variety whose leaves take on a magnificent metallic sheen as they mature. Provide lots of food and water, and stand back. Cut to ground in fall. These plants are not sexed because they're really grown just for the foliage, so chances are you won't get hop flowers on your plant. But if you do, they'll be the Aroma type for beer-making. It's a beauty in the garden and the vase. Hops flowers help prevent spoilage of beer due to their antibiotic properties. They also coagulate excess proteins that cause cloudiness in beer. Who knew that this genus is in the cannabis family? The similarity is such that inter-species grafting usually succeeds. Zones 4-9. Grown in 1-gal containers. Fall shipping is ongoing. Sorry, no shipping to AK, HI. Fall-shipped plants will be nearly dormant with little if any top growth. Image courtesy of Deer Island Brewery.
